To those who cannot get the GUS to sound when they use an external midi
device. I once saw a message saying that Ultrajoy has a bug that causes the
midi input to be disabled after it is run.
So if you have Ultrajoy in your autoexec then try removing it.
Another thing could be that once a keyboard starts sending note on messages
it only uses running status. That means it does not send the complete message but
only a portion. If the listening device did not receive the last non running status
message then it will ignore any running status messages. My cheap Casio keyboard
only send note on messages so it has this problem. The fix for this is
to turn off the keyboard and then turn it back on so that it will send a complete
note on message. Another fix for this is to send a different control message
like mod wheel or pitch bend. The keyboard will then stop using running status to
send this new message.
The Korg will send more than just note on messages so I doub't that running status
is the problem.

I like that idea! Let's do it. Course, we'd need some public archive to start
gathering up everybody's samples. I doubt EPAS has that much space.
I'm thinking of getting a CD writing drive one of these days when I can afford
it, and starting a little business, putting things on CD's for people. I'd
be glad to undertake a project like this when I am in a position to do so.

Subject: Powerchords comments
To the Powerchords people at Howling Dog Systems:
I've been learning and experimenting with Powerchords. It's a neat concept,
and I basically like it, but I have a lot of ideas for things that could be
done to make it better. (I'm using the one that came with the GUS.)
1. Windows have to be moved around a lot to make for convenient access to
the various icons and palettes. I really don't have enough room on the screen
for all of it. I suggest we dispense with the palettes, and use the desktop
itself, or perhaps just one big window, for a palette. The icons identify an
object as a drum rhythm or melody or whatever, so having separate palettes is
unnecessary and wastes time.
2. The cleaver should be able to make more than just three breaks in a
measure.
3. The so-called "instrument" window (which is really used to create
chords and should be labeled as such) should show a keyboard as well as the
guitar strings, or be switchable. In either case it should simultaneously
show the staff view too; thus the separate staff window could be eliminated.
4. Do you really expect me to enter pitch bend information one data item
at a time? There should be a graphical view for controllers of all kinds, with
a "controller fill" feature like Cakewalk has. Except you could one-up them
by including several rate formulae: linear (like Cakewalk), exponential,
and perhaps one that looks like half a cycle of a sinusoid, etc.
5. You've got to add the ability to put more than one melody track in a
bar! What if I want to have a lead melody plus some special effects (like
birds or ocean surf or the helicopter)? What about harmony, on a different
instrument? I'd suggest that each bar should have room for two melody icons,
and if more are dragged in it should change to a scrollable listbox with room
for any number of icons.
6. I'd also like to be able to play a wav file at a given time in the song.
You've got a foundation for a great product, but I'd sure like to see lots of
improvement on the next version.

Subject: Power Chords Pro - patches and upgrades
Roland had some questions about the Power Chords Pro Demo

Most of the patches I've checked (not many) had no useful information in the
name part of the patch file. However, this is a good idea, and we will
probably add it as an option in the future.
Note that when selecting patches (ie. double click on melody part in song or
palette) any patches that come from the selected bank are displayed using the
file name of the patch instead of the GM name, plus they have a bank number
tacked on.

Sorry... why not post some?

The upgrade from the GUS version to the PRO version will be available for the
forseeable future. The cost is $75.00 US. This includes shipping charges. The
pro version comes complete with a 120 page manual.
